5 Ways on How You Can Prevent and Remedy Nail Fungus
Nail fungus is quite a nasty ailment to have. It is itchy, blotchy, red, scaly, stinks, and what’s more, it looks ghastly! It is therefore a good thing that people have found ways to prevent or remedy nail fungus.
1. Practice proper body hygiene
Everyone, as in every human body, should at least know how to take a bath thoroughly and properly. There are many excuses in this world that can limit a person’s ability to do this. For example, lack of water, lack of facilities, lack of space, etc. Fortunately, proper body hygiene doesn’t mean taking a bubble bath everyday. It just means to scrub the entire body thoroughly, from the folds and insides of your fingers and toes to those hard-to-reach areas of your body. Why should you do it? Well, fungi thrive on dirt and moist damp places. Areas in the body that are fit their specifications are hands and feet, specifically the nail areas. Therefore, to avoid that pesky nail fungus, keep your body clean.
2. Trim and keep your nails neat
Unless you are planning to break the record for the longest fingernail or toenail, it is always a good practice to keep them short and neat. Use the proper nail clippers for each specific area: fingernail clippers for fingernails and toenail clippers for toenails. This is to avoid breaking the nails or cutting them irregularly. This also means that you do not use your teeth to keep them trimmed. A fungal infection on your nail may transmit to your mouth by doing just that. Trimming them diminishes the risk of acquiring a fungal infection.
3. Wear clothing of natural fibers
As you know, fungus thrives on warm damp areas of the body. Wearing clothes of natural fiber improves the air circulation in the area, thus keeping it dry. Since the fungus has lost its normal habitat, it will cease to exist, therefore easily eradicated. Just make sure that the clothing you wear, especially the socks are not damp to begin with. You will just be adding to the natural habitat of the fungus.
4. Use of natural oils and vinegar as a foot soak
Who doesn’t want some pampering in their lives? To be able to relax, place your feet on a foot soak for about 20 to 30 minutes. The foot soak can be a combination of warm water, tea tree oil, oil of oregano, lavender oil, and diluted vinegar. Their antifungal properties will rid your feet of the fungi thriving on it as well as make the skin of your feet be softer and smoother. This is definitely a good way to remedy nail fungus.
5. Consult a doctor
If you notice that your nails are already tinged with a different color as well as they are itchier and swollen, then it is definitely a good idea to consult with a doctor or a podiatrist. These symptoms are typical of a nail fungal infection that has already progressed quite rapidly. The doctor will provide you with an antifungal medication, either a topical cream or tablet, depending on extent of the infection. This has to be taken according to the prescription to avoid any adverse effects on your body.
