Is pain a symptom of toenail fungal infections?

asked:

My two big toenails have been a yellowish color since last summer. I figured it was probably from using an old nail polish. Then about a month ago, I woke up and my left big toe was very painful to touch. I blamed it on the pointy dress shoes I had been wearing the day before (but never had any problems with previously). One week later, I still felt a lot of pain around the base and sides of my toenail with swelling also present. I went to a podiatrist and he diagnosed it as a fungal infection.- cleaned around the nail and prescribed an antibiotic. Now it’s 1 month later, my toe is still very painful to touch, still swollen at the base of the nail, and has not grown at all in almost 2 months. The Dr. said the only thing left to do is remove the nail to release the pressure and stop the pain. All of the other postings i’ve read about nail fungal infections do not list pain as a symptom. Is there any other possible diagnosis or treatments before I have the nail removed?
