it happen to me many times becuz I play basketball. you need to put a cotton under the nail to rise it up! also when you cutting your nails, just cut it even and don’t cut the corners -leave them coming out!
When I was young I was told to not cut the nails too short, and to wear comfortable (not tight shoes). When I was a beautician I learned to trim the cuticles and sand off the calluses and trim skin pieces from around the nail. I also learned to clean “under” the nail tip and around the edges. After trimming the skin if it’s sensitive you can use alcohol or some antibiotic and by the next morning you’re set to go.
I’ve known of some women where I used to work who used to wear those real pointy shoes and when they got fed up with the ingrown toenails they just had those nails removed by the doctor. Certainly you have to be careful afterward so you don’t cause damage to those toes, but if you have super bad problems then this “may” be the way to go.
In my experience… GOING TO THE DOCTOR, has been the most effective way to treat the problem. I have had two ingrown toenails. One went away after following the doctors instructions (soaking it, avoiding tight shoes and so on…) the other one had to be removed and I had to wear a “special shoe”… It really depends on how bad it is and how quickly you want relief.
If you are in a lot of pain or if it appears to be infected, I would suggest a trip to the podiatrist ASAP… It is likely to get way worse (and fast)…
Ingrown toenails should be treated as soon as they are recognized. In many cases, people with uninfected ingrown toenails can obtain relief with the following simple regimen:
Soak the feet in warm salt water
Dry them thoroughly with a clean towel
Apply a mild antiseptic solution to the area
Bandage the toe
If excessive inflammation, swelling, pain or discharge is present, the toenail probably is infected and should be treated by a physician. A podiatrist can trim or remove the infected nail with a minor in-office surgical procedure. He or she can remove the offending portion of the nail or overgrown skin with a scalpel and treat the infection. Unless, the problem is congenital, the best way to prevent ingrown toenails is to protect the feet from trauma and wear shoes with adequate room for the toes.
Cutting toe nails properly goes a long way toward the prevention of ingrown toenails. Using a safety nail clipper, cut the nails straight across, so that the nail corner is visible. If you cut the nail too short, you are inviting the nail corner to grow into the skin. It is the natural tendency, when the edge of the nail starts to grow in, to cut down at an angle at the nail edge, to relieve the pain. This does relieve the pain temporarily, but it also can start a downward spiral, training the nail to become more and more ingrown.

Also, My grandmother recently had one and was told to cut a “V” in the center of it and the problem went away in just a few days…. BEST OF LUCK!
Never cut them straight across. Chris had the right idea….cut a small V in the center which really helps. My mother used to do it and I laughed at her about it but after having a couple myself, I found that it really worked.
1.- TREATMENT
A.- AT HOME-Self-care
You can treat most ingrown toenails at home. Here’s how:
a.- Soak your feet.
- Do this for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day, using warm salt water (1 teaspoon of table salt per pint of water) or warm, soapy water.
- Soaking reduces swelling and relieves tenderness.
b.- Give your nail some help.
- Put fresh bits of cotton under the ingrown edge after each soaking.
- This will help the nail eventually grow above the skin edge.
c.- Use a topical antibiotic.
- Apply an antibiotic ointment and bandage the tender area.
d.- Choose sensible footwear.
- Consider wearing open-toed shoes or sandals until your toe feels better.
e.- Take pain relievers.
- If there’s severe pain, take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as
acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) 1000 mg orally 4 times daily if needed
and/or
ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) 800 mg orally, after food, 4 times daily if needed
f.- Check your feet.
- If you have diabetes, check your feet daily for signs of ingrown toenails or other foot problems.
B.- BY A DOCTOR-(surgeon)
If Self-care fails, a surgeon will do one of the following things
a.- partial nail removal with cauterization of the nail matrix which is curative in 70-90% of cases.
b.- if the above fails, partial or total ablation of the nail plate
C.- PREVENTION
To help prevent an ingrown toenail:
a.- Trim your toenails straight across.
- Don’t curve your nails to match the shape of the front of your toe.
- If you have your toenails done at a nail salon, be sure to tell your pedicurist to trim your nails straight across.
- If you have circulation problems in your feet from disorders such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, see a podiatrist regularly to have your nails professionally trimmed.
b.- Keep toenails at a moderate length.
- Trim toenails so they’re even with the tips of your toes. If you trim your toenails too short, the pressure from your shoes on your toes’ tissue may direct your nails to grow into the tissue.
c.- Wear shoes that fit properly.
- Shoes that place excessive pressure on your toes or pinch your toes may cause your nails to grow into surrounding tissue.
- If you have nerve impairment to your feet, you may not be able to sense if your shoes fit too tightly. - - - Take care to buy and wear properly fitted shoes, preferably from a shoe store specializing in fitting shoes for people with foot problems.
d.- Wear protective footwear.
- If your work puts you at risk of injuring your toes, buy footwear such as steel-toed shoes, which protect your toes.
